Introduction

Emerging Technologies and Creative Industries - A Vision for the Future

Friday June 23rd 2006 - Leicester Marriott Hotel

Over 80 delegates attended the newly opened Marriott Hotel on the outskirts of Leicester for the ETCI06 Conference.

Keynote speakers from the United States and Oman along with a range of regional speakers, presented the challenge for the East Midlands in harnessing new emerging technologies within the creative industries sector. The day started by looking at the technology advances being made at a global level and then developed towards a more focused view of what local organisations are doing to successfully implement these advances for the benefit of the East Midlands.

The day allowed delegates not only to update their knowledge, but also to see how local companies are taking full advantage of the opportunities that new digital technologies are offering.

For example: Leicester.tv,   Attenborough Dental,   Active Ingredient,   Low Brow Trash

The day ended with presentations by representatives from higher education and the public sector to consider the support that is needed to enable the East Midlands to meet its targets.

Video's of all presentations from the conference will be available on the website soon.

Emerging Technologies: Showcasing the Best Applications

COMPETITION WINNERS

Competition One aimed to find the individual or organisation harnessing emerging technologies in the most innovative or creative way. This competition was targeted at individuals or organisations using technology to drive either new business, new efficiencies, new forms of communication or new forms of artistic expression.

Following a number of entries, it came down to two finalists who presented their ideas to delegates at the conference.

1st Place - Attenborough Dental www.attenborough.com

A revolutionary Daedalus Project which merges computed patient tomography and laser scan data to give a composite 3-dimensional image - used to design and produce a new smile.

2nd Place - Active Ingredient www.i-am-ai.net

Active Ingredient have developed a new project that is both an artwork and pervasive game that encourages people to take part in exercise as a creative and non-competitive experience. It is designed to engage people of all ages and both genders, but is specifically targeted at people who have sedentary lifestyles.

Competition Two was a chance to present innovative ideas on how to use emerging technologies to help put the region more firmly on the map.

1st Place - Low Brow Trash www.lowbrowtrash.co.uk

Low Brow Trash would propose to create a new form of gaming culture that would be interactive, real time and potentially global. Most of us are aware of online gaming, computer gaming and mobile phone games, LBT plan to take elements from all these and create a game that involves team competition or collaboration, online possibilities and would involve the human form in a kind of large scale interactive chess.

This event is presented by the New Technology Initiative Creative Industries Centre for Knowledge Exchange in the East Midlands - a partnership between
